SEO, usability and online marketing

I first set out to provide search engine optimization, usability and online marketing services way back in mid 2001. Since then, the digital environment has changed beyond recognition; the art of optimizing for search is now infinitely more complex, usability is a science and online marketing is a cut-throat and highly lucrative business.

Looking back to some of my work in the early days - my first client was a Californian job site that found me through my Open Directory listing - I can't help but reflect about the enormous amount I have learnt in the intervening years. In fact, that's the great thing about internet marketing; it's continually changing so there are always new techniques to learn, new technologies to embrace and new challenges too.

A highly portable business

You probably thought I meant to say profitable. Well, the other great thing about the internet is its portability. I've run YouSiteAssessed.com from two countries over the years; when I moved from the UK, I simply picked up my laptop and took my business with me. And, yes, it has kept me clothed and fed although early retirement has continued to elude me!

So why have I stopped?

I'm back in the UK now and I'm putting all the online experience I have acquired over the years to good use. I'm working for a household name and managing a far bigger budget than I could ever have hoped to be responsible for as a 'one-man band' operation. It also means I'm at the cutting edge of Digital and able to explore opportunities such as iPhone apps and other aspects of the mobile web. Plus, I'm acquiring even more knowledge of online marketing and digital media in the process.

So is YourSiteAssessed.com really dead?

Sadly - yes. It has served me well over the years but if at any time in the future my entrepreneurial leanings gain the upper hand then I will re-brand myself. As I have learned over the years, even some of my most loyal clients cannot remember how many times the letter 's' appears in YourSiteAssessed.com (the correct answer is five)!

And finally...

A big thank you to all those who have entrusted me with their online marketing over the years. You've given me an insight into a lot of different businesses and I hope you think I've added value.
